Alcoa locks 10-year energy contract for US smelter

Alcoa’s Massena Operations in New York has secured a 10-year energy contract with the NYPA. The contract will see the NYPA provide 240MW to the Massena Operations from 1 April 2026, with the possibility of two additional five-year terms.

As well as the contract, Alcoa is investing around $60m into the operations through to 2028 in order to modernise the anode baking furnace. Alcoa stated that the investment was only possible due to the energy contract and a grant of around $6m from ESD.

William F. Oplinger, CEO of Alcoa, said: “We are proud to make aluminium in New York and the United States.

“Long-term, competitively priced energy enables Alcoa to proceed with this important investment that will help us meet the demands of today while planning for tomorrow,

“We are extremely pleased to have worked with NYPA and ESD to achieve this outcome for our Massena Operations, which will continue to bring economic benefits to the region and sustain American manufacturing.”

Massena Operations has an annual nameplate capacity of 130kt and is the world’s largest continuously operating smelter. It is one of the four remaining smelters in the US.
