Anglo American launches H2 Moves Europe
Anglo American announces the launch of H2 Moves Europe, designed to accelerate awareness and encourage adoption of hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) technology and its role in the future of clean transport.
As part of H2 Moves Europe, Anglo American is collaborating with Hype, the world’s largest FCEV taxi operator and the official taxi provider of the upcoming Paris Olympics, to deploy two new fleets of zero-emission FCEVs – 250 in Paris and 50 in Brussels. The fleets will include a mixture of fuel cell powered Peugeot e-Expert and Citroën ë-Jumpy vehicles adapted for wheelchair users, as well as Toyota Mirai and Hyundai Nexo cars.
H2 Moves Europe builds upon the success of the H2 Moves Berlin pilot project launched in 2023 together with Toyota Germany and SafeDriver Group-ENNOO, which has now completed nearly 500,000 passenger journeys over a total of 6 million kilometres, in addition to growing momentum around refuelling infrastructure, with the coming-into-force in April of the European Union’s Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR).
Benny Oeyen, Executive Head of Market Development for Anglo American, said: “Hydrogen-powered FCEVs are expected to play a significant role in the mix of clean drivetrain technologies needed to effectively decarbonise transport. FCEVs are particularly well suited to vehicle fleets, such as taxis and buses, and also offer relief to increasingly pressured battery minerals supply chains.
“Through H2 Moves Europe, and our new collaboration with Hype in Paris and Brussels, we hope to further demonstrate the many range and refuelling benefits of FCEV technology to wider audiences of car buyers, building upon the success of our existing FCEV deployment initiatives in Berlin, China and South Africa.”
Mathieu Gardies, CEO of Hype, said: “Since 2015, Hype has been a global showcase for the benefits of hydrogen mobility. We are glad to collaborate with Anglo American to increase our reach and pursue our growth objectives in Paris and in new markets such as Brussels.”
As a leading global producer of the platinum needed for fuel cells, Anglo American has been an early supporter of FCEV technology. When used in a fuel cell, platinum catalyses a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen to generate clean electricity. This is then used to power the motor of an FCEV, which can be refuelled in five minutes with ranges of up to 650km, just like a petrol or diesel vehicle but with zero exhaust emissions. Through H2 Moves Europe, and other FCEV-focused efforts, Anglo American actively supports the emerging ecosystem of hydrogen-powered transport globally.
