Celsa increases production with upgraded finishing block for wire rod mill
Primetals Technologies recently received the final acceptance certificate (FAC) from Celsa France for a successful upgrade to the finishing end of the company’s wire rod mill, located in Bayonne, France. The project involved replacing the finishing block and reform station, providing a solution to issues caused by a third-party supplier’s previously installed equipment, which had repeatedly led to unplanned downtime.
Celsa France selected Primetals Technologies for the upgrade based on the companies’ longstanding partnership and Primetals Technologies’ strong track record of high-performing references.
The upgrade included a new 10-stand Morgan Vee No-Twist Mill featuring a 3-Hi speed increaser gearbox, as well as a replacement of the 1,200 mm Reform Tub.
Morgan No-Twist Mill – Quality Improvement
The new 10-stand Morgan Vee No-Twist Mill at Celsa France addresses the downtime issues of the previous installation by ensuring stable, reliable operation at speeds up to 105 meters per second for low-, medium-, and high-carbon steel grades. Overall mill productivity has increased thanks to quicker, more efficient rolling, while maintenance costs and roll change times have decreased.
The new 3-Hi speed increaser gearbox links up to the newly installed No-Twist Mill and Celsa France’s existing motor position, demonstrating the technology’s design flexibility and compatibility with existing mill hardware.
Reform Tub Enhances Downstream Processing
The patented ring distributor, as part of the newly installed reform tub, minimizes coil height and eliminates stray rings. Additionally, the ring distributor ensures tangle-free payoff, dramatically reducing delays in downstream processing.
