Chinese companies open electrolytic aluminium plant in Angola
A new electrolytic aluminium plant has opened in Angola. The project is a collaboration between Chinese companies Hebei Huatong Wire and Cables Group to create jobs, boost regional industrialisation, and diversify the national economy.
The facility is expected to produce 120,000 tonnes of electrolytic aluminium annually and create an estimated 1,200 jobs.
The project has a planned five phases. The first phase of the project is expected to require an investment of $250 million.
Angola President Joao Lourenco inaugurated the plant, located in the Barra do Dande Free Trade Zone, Bengo province.
In a press conference, President Lourenco emphasised Angola’s need for private investment across all sectors of the economy.
He stated that this initiative will not only to ensure more jobs for young Angolans but will expand the range of products and services that benefit the economy.
Zhang Wendong, Chief Executive Officer of Huatong Angola, said that the aluminium industrial park goes beyond just an investment, adding that it is a commitment to the future and to Angola’s sustainable development.
Professional training programmes and internships are being put in place to develop the skillset of the future Angolan industry.
