JFE Steel integrate waste plastic into steel production
JFE Steel Corporation sets forth on a groundbreaking venture, finalizing a partnership with J Circular System Co. Ltd. The focus? Establishing a plastic-recycling framework to revolutionize steel production. This strategic move is part of JFE Steel’s commitment to leverage waste plastic in steelmaking, aligning with Japan’s Plastic Resource Circulation Act.
The newly formed J Circular System, situated in Kawasaki and founded in July 2023, aims to operate a robust waste plastic recycling business. With stakeholders like J&T Recycling and East Japan Railway Company (JR East), this initiative seeks national certification for an integrated plastic-recycling business, ensuring access to a stable supply of waste plastic as per Article 33 of Japan’s Plastic Resource Circulation Act.
While integrating waste plastic into steel production offers environmental benefits, procuring the necessary plastic presents challenges. Through this collaboration with J Circular System, JFE Steel gains access to diverse sources of waste plastic, encompassing not only used containers and packaging but also industrial waste.
JFE Steel aligns its efforts with the JFE Group Environmental Vision for 2050, striving to curtail direct CO2 emissions and reduce carbon footprints across its supply chain. This venture marks a significant step in addressing climate change and steering towards a more sustainable future.
