Vedanta Aluminium achieves renewable energy gains

Vedanta Aluminium India’s largest aluminium producer, consumed 1.57 billion units of renewable energy in Financial year 2025,which it said marked a milestone in its 2030 decarbonisation roadmap.

The company also reported an 8.96% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions intensity since FY21, alongside progress in energy efficiency, clean power sourcing, and community-led sustainability initiatives.

Vedanta Aluminium is strengthening its long-term strategy to secure approximately 1500MW of renewable power through power purchase agreements (PPAs) while scaling energy-conservation measures across its operations.

In FY25, Vedanta Aluminium expanded its renewable energy portfolio through long-term green PPAs, making clean energy a pillar of its operational strategy.

The company achieved 378 million units (MU) of energy savings through a combination of advanced waste-heat recovery systems, improved boiler and turbine performance, deployment of energy-efficient technologies, and real-time digital monitoring of plant operations.

A key contributor to efficiency gains has been Vedanta Aluminium’s patented potlining technology, which delivers 200 kWh per tonne of aluminium in operational energy savings, enhancing smelter efficiency.

Strengthening its long-term climate action framework, Vedanta Aluminium entered into a partnership with PwC India in 2025 to scale decarbonisation, water positivity, and biodiversity initiatives across all major locations.

The company has also institutionalised Communities of Practice focused on carbon, water, waste, biodiversity, and tailings to ensure consistent tracking and execution of ESG goals.

Under its 2030 sustainability targets, Vedanta Aluminium aims for 30% of its product portfolio to comprise low-carbon aluminium, driven by the expansion of its Restora and Restora Ultra product lines.

Rajiv Kumar, CEO, Vedanta Aluminium, said: “Our commitment to sustainability is about transforming the way aluminium is produced in India.

“Consuming 1.57 billion units of renewable energy this year reflects our determination to embed clean energy and efficiency at the heart of our operations, while creating shared value for communities and stakeholders.”

To embed a culture of responsible energy use, the company has rolled out energy-efficiency training programmes across all sites, aligned with global best practices and ISO 50001 Energy Management standards.
