JFE Steel pioneer JGreeX green steel

JFE Steel Corporation’s groundbreaking initiative, JGreeX™ green steel, secures a significant milestone in the maritime sector. Shipping giants Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha and Daiichi Chuo Kisen Kaisha have opted for JFE Steel’s JGreeX™ for large dry bulk carriers, signaling a monumental stride in embracing eco-friendly steel solutions.

The collaboration sees Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha selecting JGreeX™ for an Ultramax dry bulk carrier, to be constructed by Imabari Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. This decision underscores JFE Steel’s ongoing efforts to work closely with shipping entities on a global scale. All steel materials for the vessel’s construction will be JGreeX™ products, renowned for their remarkable reduction of CO2 emissions in the steelmaking process. The expected supply of 7,000 metric tons of JGreeX™ products from 2024, culminating in the commissioning of the world’s largest all-green steel vessel in 2026, marks a remarkable feat in maritime sustainability.

In a parallel endeavor, Daiichi Chuo Kisen Kaisha has chosen JGreeX™ for two coastal dry bulkers, constructed by Higaki Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., furthering the commitment towards eco-friendly steel usage. This expansion brings JFE Steel’s anticipated supply of JGreeX™ products for seven dry bulk vessels to approximately 28,000 metric tons.

The maritime industry’s proactive stance in curbing CO2 emissions aligns with the global drive for carbon neutrality. The adoption of green steel for shipbuilding serves as a significant catalyst in reducing emissions. Beyond producing JGreeX™, JFE Steel commits to participating as a shipper in the supply chain, sharing the expenses linked to utilizing green steel to reduce CO2 emissions.

Moving forward, JFE Steel remains dedicated to contributing to global decarbonization. Their strategy involves further reducing CO2 emissions by leveraging low-carbon and high-efficiency technologies, underscoring the commitment to expand JGreeX™ sales and promote the adoption of green steel.
