Oman considers three aluminium projects
Oman’s Special Economic Zone at Duqm (SEZAD) is weighing up options of three proposed aluminium projects in its site.
The Sultanate of Oman is considering the construction of up to three aluminium projects.
According to the quarterly newsletter of the Public Authority for Special Economic Zones and Free Zones (OPAZ), the Green Aluminium Project is under study. It proposes investments of RO 2.4 billion ($6.24 billion), and a production capacity of 530,000 tonnes annually of green aluminium ingots, in addition to 620,000 tonnes of aluminium billets and pre-cast slabs, using low-carbon emission technologies.
The magazine suggests the projects aim to leverage green hydrogen and other low-carbon energy sources slated to come on stream in the economic zone from around 2030 onwards.
Also in the pipeline for implementation at the zone are the Geely Green Aluminium Project and the Pearl Green Iron and Aluminium Project, in partnership with regional investors, according to the newsletter.
The Special Economic Zone says it is increasingly prioritising the development of green industries and low-carbon metals, particularly iron and aluminium, leveraging the country’s expanding green hydrogen ecosystem.
