South Africa has the potential to become a leader in green steel production
Green steel is steel that’s produced using environmentally friendly and sustainable methods. This includes: Using renewable energy sources, Reducing carbon dioxide emissions, and Minimizing and recycling waste.
Some ways to produce green steel include:
- Using “green hydrogen”: Hydrogen produced via electrolysis using water and renewable electricity is completely free of CO₂ emissions.
- Using electric arc furnaces: These furnaces are gradually replacing traditional ones, but they are not always powered by renewable sources.
- Reusing more steel: Increasing the use of scrap can help produce more sustainably.
The term “green steel” is often used to describe a product that does not meet any pre-defined criteria. Many companies have begun to promote their steel as “green” when it may not actually be. South Africa has the potential to become a leader in green steel production because it’s a top producer of iron ore and has rich renewable energy resources.
