Vedanta Aluminium increases billet production to 830,000 tonnes
Vedanta Aluminium has expanded its billet production capacity at its Jharsuguda operations in Odisha, India. This takes the total billet production capacity to 830,000 tonnes per year and places the plant among the largest billet manufacturing operations globally.
The expansion adds 250,000 tonnes of new capacity to the existing 580,000 tonnes of capacity per year, bringing the total to 830,000 tonnes.
This significant scale-up strengthens the company’s ability to supply high-quality products to customers worldwide, broadens its value-added product (VAP) portfolio, and further reinforces its role in supporting India’s fast-growing extrusion and downstream sectors.
Rajiv Kumar, CEO of Vedanta Aluminium, said: “Vedanta Aluminium is committed to building a globally competitive, self-reliant aluminium manufacturing base for India. The accelerated expansion at our Jharsuguda operations is a crucial step toward achieving that vision.
“This scale-up enhances our ability to serve high-growth industries and reinforces India’s position as a rising force in the global aluminium landscape. We remain focused on delivering long-term value for the nation and all our stakeholders.”
Vedanta Aluminium’s billets, available in diameters ranging from five to 12 inches, are key semifinished products used in extrusion processes to create precision engineered profiles.
These profiles support critical industries including infrastructure, transportation, renewable energy, electrical systems, consumer goods, and packaging.
Due to aluminium’s high strength-to-weight ratio, recyclability and versatility, the billets also play a vital role in enabling sustainable manufacturing and modern design solutions.
This positions Jharsuguda among the largest aluminium billet production sites globally and reinforces Vedanta Aluminium’s leadership in the Indian market, where it already supplies over half of the country’s domestic billet demand.
The billet facility is equipped with advanced casting and homogenising technology from Wagstaff and Hertwich. Additionally, a new 120 KTPA Primary Foundry Alloy (PFA) facility has been set up at the site, further expanding the company’s PFA production capabilities.
C Chandru, CEO at Vedanta Jharsuguda, added: “This is a testament to our focus on expanding value-added aluminium production with speed, technical excellence, and adherence to global standards.
“Our teams have demonstrated exemplary execution, and this milestone will further strengthen Jharsuguda’s position as a world-class aluminium manufacturing hub.”
With customers in more than 60 countries, the company offers more than 25 high-quality variants of billets and plans to further expand capacity across its operations in Odisha and Chhattisgarh to 1.25 MTPA.
Its Jharsuguda plant is the first primary aluminium smelter in India to receive certifications from the Bureau of Indian Standards and the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative.
